Hopefully it would be apparent that a conversational impetus guides our work, and that we follow the train of our own accidents as readily as any other train. And that we allow — hopefully — for hidden intentions to surface and to be observed, and that this could be considered a value of sorts, since it is a convention we vehemently adhere to, even when it means derailing the train itself.
Our techniques, in that we have any, are designed to lead us jointly into the tangled maze of emotional tangents and in-jokes that characterize our conversations, and to help us more perfectly realize the hidden intent of the created moment as it occurs, and as we experience it, and share it with each other and with our listeners, in those times and places in which listeners, occasionally, exist.
Otherwise we eschew technique, try to avoid telling each other what to play, and feel satisfied if we can inspire laughter, brooding, or dancing from anyone who happens to be nearby.
The shared moment in all its variables is certainly a holy grail that inspires much searching for us, and we can’t claim any particular qualifications, as we are not moral agents nor exceptional musicians. But we are purists in the sense that we are inviting the listener into a creative act that is happening on the spot, as opposed to a re-creation of ideas that pre-exist their demonstration.
Whether we are driven by blind optimism or by an overpowering sense of dread is anybody’s guess. But great changes are seemingly before us, both individually and collectively, and this music is, if nothing else, a reaction to the terrifying uncertainty that permeates every aspect of our lives.
Our machines are rusting, pieced together with duct tape and baling wire, subject to hacks both heavenly and obscene. They are certainly less than human, less than individually sentient: and yet they still seem to yearn to join the dance!
